More information

Non-Technical Summary: Drugs used to prevent or treat diseases or to enhance reproductive or production performance are frequently not approved for use in minor animal species because of cost. The Minor Use Animal Drug Program funds research to provide information on the safe effective and legal use of animal drugs for minor species by performing and funding original research studies in support of minor uses. <P> Approach: Will communicate with producers of minor animal species, pharmaceutical companies, research interests, and the Center for Veterinary Medicine to identify needs for animal drugs for minor species and minor uses in major species, and will perform research to provide data concerning the safe and effective use of drugs intended for minor species. The PI works with experts at other academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies and the FDA/CVM to provide accurate and acceptable data. The PI also works with the CVM to facilitate the approval process for minor use animal drugs.
