Nonthermal Processing Workshops for Enhancing Safety and Quality of Foods

Objective

Provide knowledge on the application of nonthermal processing technologies to food safety
Identify barriers in the efficacy of these emerging technologies
Develop integrated strategies to address critical food safety and quality issues
Report progress and status of new developments with respect to food safety

More information

Proposed location for Workshop #1 will be in Columbus, Ohio, USA. The Ohio State University is one of the centers for the development and evaluation of nonthermal processing technologies. Laboratory and pilot plant scale processing equipment is in place for demonstrations. Location of Workshop #2 will be selected at the time of completion of Workshop #1. Candidate locations are: Philadelphia (USDA Eastern Regional Research Center), Chicago (National Center for Food Safety and Technologies), and a possible overseas location including the Netherlands and Australia. These workshops will be co-sponsored by Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Nonthermal Processing Division and The European Federation of Food Science and Technology (EFFoST) in collaboration with other federal and academic programs. Supporting letters are included at the end of Project Description.

There is a emerging need to undersdand the food safety impact of nonthermal processes for successful applications of these technologies. The workshops will provide updated information on nonthermal technologies that can be used to help advance the field of food safety.
