Novel Sources of FHB Resistance in Bread and Durum Wheat

Objective

Identify and validate new sources of FHB resistance, diversify the current resistance gene pool utilized by the USWBSI community to facilitate the utilization of resistant germplasm; identify and acquire tetraploid new sources of FHB resistance, and facilitate the utilization of resistant germplasm of cytogenetic stocks.

More information

Approach: Evaluate germplasm in the CIMMYT genebank for FHB response; Use DNA markers to clearly define genetic configuration of new germplasm from a global search; Encourage discussion and data exchange between breeders to discover new resistant germplasm and their response to F. graminearum; Evaluate durum wheat germplasm in the CIMMYT genebank for novel resistance; Select durum wheat containing locus of 3BS of Sumai#3; Cross synthetic FHB resistant wheat with the ph1c mutant of durum to induce homologous recombination between A genome of durum wheat and D genome of Aegilops tauschii in order to promote transfer of the resistance.
