Nutraceutical Safety and Efficacy

Objective

Selection, cultivation, propagation of standardized phytoceutical plants
Phytochemical/genomic composition (DNA and chemical fingerprinting of plant(s)
Inhibitory effect of selected fractions exposed to whole cell-line(s) and metabolism
Safety valuations with the development of rapid immunoassay
Studies of bioavailability
Studies of efficacy (in-vitro, whole animal, human)

More information

NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 permits the sale of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and herbs (individually or naturally occurring) but these can lack thorough safety and efficacy data. The assurance of safety and efficacy resides in identifying nutraceutical products chemically and biologically at their origin by global positioning, and throughout their bar-coded existence and monitored under the principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (protects against bioterrorism)

APPROACH: 1. Collection and identification (DNA sequence) of medicinal plants unique to the New Jersey Pine Barrens (NI labs at NJ EcoComplex) 2. Preparative bioassay directed fractionation chemistry HPLC/MS equipment in New Brunswick (CAFT), NJ EcoComplex (NI) 3. Comparative efficacy (DNA sequence) studies of human cancer cell lines (Coriell Institute, Camden) 4. Developoment of standardized nutraceutical products and human efficacy studies (Cooper Health Systems, Camden) 5. Application of Intelligent Product Delivery System for safety assurance 6. Conduct of herbal medicine and nutraceutical education courses for professionals (Cook OCPE)
