Phase IX-Developing Resident Instruction in Food and Agriculture Related Sciences at Land Grant Institutions in the Pacific and Caribbean

Objective

<p>UPR-M: </p>
<p>1. Improve undergraduate curriculum in consortium institution through the development and offering of a Food Safety course. </p>
<p>2. Strengthen students' entrepreneurship skills through the offering of an intramural practicum. </p>
<p>3. Develop research skills in undergraduate ag students </p>
<p>UOG: </p>
<p>1. To improve curricula by sharing available educational resources. </p>
<p>2. Provide authentic work experience in an educational environment. </p>
<p>3. Expand educational offerings to better represent the current state of Guam and the world. </p>
<p>4. Evaluate the current effectiveness of programs and look for ways to improve them to meet current educational needs. </p>
<p>5. Provide a leading edge program in food safety and nutrition. </p>
<p>6. Provide qualified undergraduate students with real-world work experience in the fields of agriculture and food. </p>

<p>1. Provide high quality classes and a sufficient number of classes so students can graduate on a timely basis. </p>

<p>4. Provide qualified undergraduate students with real-world work experience in the fields of agriculture and food. </p>

<p>CMI: </p>
<p>1. Faculty Preparation and Enhancement for Teaching. 2. To take knowledge and share it more actively with more learners. COM-FSM: 1. Provide equitable teaching materials and library resources at all campuses. </p>
<p>2. Prepare science teachers to teach at the High School level to support and improve science programs </p>
<p>3. Review agriculture programs and conduct assessment surveys as needed. </p>
<p>4. Encourage students to explore entrepreneurial and government service careers. </p>
<p>5. Increase student enrollment in COM-FSM certificate and AS courses with potential to transfer to a university later on. </p>

<p>NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY:<br/> The Land-Grant Institutions in the Insular Areas of the Caribbean and the Pacific, organized under the Consortium named CariPac, have as mission "To provide excellent higher education in Agriculture and Food Science, within the Insular Areas, to meet the evolving needs of a global society." This supports the RIIA program goals: (1) To increase the number and diversity of students who will pursue and complete a 2 or 4 year postsecondary degree in the food and agricultural sciences, or other STEM fields closely related to the food and agricultural sciences, and encourage study in areas that contribute to any of the five NIFA Priority Areas; and (2) To enhance the quality of postsecondary instruction and faculty development to help meet current and future national food and agricultural sciences workplace needs. Each participating
institution will focuses its objectives primarily on NIFA priority area of Global Food Security and Hunger and as a consortium on incorporating Food Safety courses into the curriculum. Through this proposal, we will continue to work together as a consortium to address the technological needs of each CariPac member institution as well as outreach activities to prospective students, acquisition of state of the art equipment, providing for faculty development trainings, activities and salary support, reviewing and updating curricular offerings, providing scholarships to agriculture and related science students, and offering hands-on research and study opportunities for undergraduates. We intend to help students achieve their professional goals by upgrading the quality of undergraduate instruction through modern instructional technologies and methodologies, updating disciplinary
content, and by developing students analytical, interpersonal, leadership, communications, problem-solving, computational, decision-making, and entrepreneurship skills and global competencies.
