To establish a comprehensive phylogenetic framework for Phytophthora spp., to develop and optimize molecular diagnostic tools, and to build a comprehensive genotype, phenotype and specimen database for Phytophthora.
Approach: Develop accurate and rapid identification of Phytophthora plant disease causal agents using genetic markers to complement pathogen identification; develop and test a number of molecular diagnostic tools/protocols, evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of methods using reference cultures as well as infected plant material; construct a relational internet database to catalog the resulting phylogenetic data systematically, and to link them to the available phenotypes of individual isolates in a format that is easily accessed, analyzed and visualized.
