Prevention of Pathogen Contamination in Food Producing Animals

Objective

Combine knowledge of animal behavior with physiologic measurements from other sciences, particularly immunology, to develop transportation practices for producers to use to help assure that swine will arrive for slaughter following transport with few pathogens.

More information

Behavioral, immunological and physiological measures will be collected from pigs in current and alternate production systems. Changes to such systems will be based on these measures. In association with the National Animal Disease Center (NADC), Ames, Iowa, measures of gut microbiology and pathogen shedding as well as antibiotic resistance will be conducted.
