PROBIOTIC MODULATION OF APPETITE TO IMPROVE BREEDER PULLET WELFARE

Objective

The overarching aim of this project is to understand the role of the endocannabinoid signaling system (eCBS) in poultry physiology and more specifically, the ability to utilize this system to improve the physiological and behavioral welfare of chickens. Aim 1) document patterns of eCBS related gene expression in the gut/brain axis in chickens with different feed consumption habits and management requirements. Comparisons will use two strains of broiler pullets (Cobb 500, Ross 708) and one strain of a layer strain (e.g. Hyline W36) in conjunction with growth, body composition and indexes of physiologic stress and untoward behavioral during the rearing period. Aim 2) determine the effect of a presumptive anorexigenic and axiety-reducing probiotic on these same variables.
