Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced primarily by Fusarium moniliforme and Fusarium proliferatum in corn. Mechanisms controlling the production of these mycotoxins in culture and field conditions have not been well established. In this study, a defined liquid medium was developed which allowed fumonisin B1 (FB1) production of up to approximately 1000 ppm by Fusarium proliferatum M5991 in shake flasks. Previously, such high concentrations could be achieved only in bioreactors. The use of this medium in shake flasks allowed rapid examination of multiple factors controlling FB1 production. Factors found to influence FB1 production include pH, glucose, and nitrogen levels.
