Proposal for a Survey of Vaccines

Objective

Periodically the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Veterinary Services (VS) has identified a need for information regarding the world-wide availability of vaccines for OIE reportable diseases. Recent examples include requests for information regarding vaccines for rabbit calicivirus, avian influenza, an exotic strain of bluetongue virus found in Louisiana, and vesicular stomatitis.
The overall goal of the IICAB is to improve the availability, safety, efficacy, and use of veterinary biologics (vaccines) throughout the world. The IICAB previously created a foreign animal disease (FAD) vaccine survey that VS has used as a valuable resource.
As an OIE collaborating center, and having previous experience creating a vaccine survey, the IICAB appears to be uniquely qualified to update the FAD vaccine survey for diseases notifiable to the OIE and which are also considered FAD in the United States. VS has elected to enter into a Cooperative Agreement with the IICAB in order to update the 2001 foreign animal disease (FAD) vaccine survey. The intent of this cooperative effort is to further program objectives by: Determining the current world-wide availability of vaccines for diseases notifiable to the OIE and which also are considered FAD in the United States.
