In connection with implementing the EU Water Framework Directive, phase I of this project investigated the potential for developing a GIS based Screening Tool that could identify those catchments within which water bodies are at risk from diffuse pollution pressures. This project (phase II) aims to develop, implement and apply a basic level Screening Tool for all potential pollutants at a national scale in order to assess the risk of pollution to water bodies within a catchment. It will also identify those catchments where a more complex modelling approach needs to be taken and provide guidance as to the modelling approach and tools required.
Includes the estimation of the risk of faecal pathogens reaching surface or groundwater bodies, building on previous work on modellling E. coli transport through soil/ agricultural systems.
