Quantitative Evaluation of Selective Factors Impacting the Development, Amplification, Persistence, and Transfer of Resistance in Pig Flora

Objective

To quantitatively model the effects of therapeutic and sub-therapeutic tylosin administration on the development, amplification, persistence, and transfer of genetic elements conferring macrolide resistance within mixed populations of commensal and pathogenic gut bacteria grown in continuous-flow culture.

More information

Approach: Commensal and foodborne pathogenic gut bacteria will be grown under conditions of sub-therapeutic and therapeutic tylosin use. Samples removed from the populations will be tested using cultural and molecular techniques to determine phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance characteristics.
