Request for Funding for Annual Meeting of Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases

Objective

The CRWAD is a scientific meeting that is held annually from Sunday through Tuesday during the first or second week of November or December that reports research in bacterial pathogenesis, biosafety and biosecurity, epidemiology and animal health economics, food and environmental safety, gastroenteric diseases, immunology, parasitology and immunoparasitology, physiology and pharmacology, respiratory diseases, and viral pathogenesis. In addition, this meeting allows approximately a dozen other satellite meetings to occur.

More information

NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: The CRWAD is a scientific meeting that is held annually from Sunday through Tuesday during the first or second week of November or December. This year, the 2006 meeting will be held in Chicago, Illinois from December 3-5th at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. The meeting will convene Sunday evening with the Researchers Reception/Poster session and conclude by 1 pm Tuesday afternoon. Attendance is limited to members, participants on the program, and guests invited by the council. The average attendance is 600 with 325 presentations. The annual CRWAD meeting is the only conference in North America that has an oral and poster presentation format in animal disease and food safety research. The conference instills members with the following: 1) Provides education for, and stimulates the creation of ideas in the minds of investigators of animal disease and food safety; 2) A forum for the exchange of information on basic and applied mechanisms of diseases from a broad discipline base; 3) A meeting which brings together true researchers in all the disciplines which make up Veterinary Medicine and 4) Fosters interactions between those who have a primary focus on animal pathogens, and other national and international investigators whose techniques and ideas may be valuable in resolving problems in animal diseases.
APPROACH: This is a conference meeting and the approach includes keynote speakers for the majority of the sections listed in the objective, oral and poster presentations. Satellite meetings occur both before and after the conference. Additionally, awards are given to the best oral and poster presentation from students in each section. Abstracts are published annually.
PROGRESS: 2007/05 TO 2008/04
OUTPUTS: The Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases (CRWAD) is an organization with the sole purpose of discussing and disseminating the research advances in animal diseases. It is a non-profit organization, and has been so since its first meeting in 1920. There is an annual meeting each December where research scientists from around the world present their recent research in oral or poster presentation formats. The meeting averages 600 in attendance, and 325 presentations. The 2007 CRWAD Meeting was held December 2-4, at the Mariott Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The successful meetings began with the Researchers Reception and poster session Sunday evening and presentations concluded by 1 pm Tuesday afternoon. Awards were presented to the best oral and poster presentation given by a graduate student in 6 categories. Support was also given to approximately a dozen satellite organizations by providing the funds for meeting rooms and audio-visual equipment, thereby allowing these satellite organizations to meet. Dissemination includes publication of a CRWAD Proceedings booklet containing the program, all abstracts and contact information, which were distributed to each participant. There is also an online website (http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/mip/crwad/index.htm) that lists the program, awards, satellite organizations and their websites, job opportunities, contact info, and newsletter.
PARTICIPANTS: Individuals working on the project (Council Members): Dr. Lynn Joens, University of Arizona - Principal Investigator/President; Dr. Richard E. IMPACT: 2007/05 TO 2008/04
The meetings and presentations allowed an increase in knowledge of the specialized fields, and allowed future collaborations for funding, from both government and industry. Specialized fields include bacterial pathogenesis, biosafety and biosecurity, epidemiology and animal health economics, food and environmental safety, gastroenteric diseases, immunology, parasitology and immunoparasitology, physiology and pharmacology, respiratory diseases, and viral pathogenesis. Students gained experience from presenting in a national meeting. The satellite meetings received an opportunity to conduct their business meetings and moved forward towards their objectives. The Proceedings booklet and website allowed members and attendees to have a reference in order to contact each other for future opportunities.
