Salvaging Craw-crab Offal in Organic Production Systems (SCOOPS)

Objective

The project goals are to enhance and strengthen our research/extension expertise in organic production, human health, food safety, sustainable agriculture, aquatic offal utilization, and attract/develop young scientists in the food an agricultural sciences workforce. The objectives are: <OL> <LI> to compare four solar drying methods for crawfish and crab offal<LI> to compare production and sensory attributes of organic and conventional pigs fed crawfish and crab offal meals<LI> to evaluate the use of crawfish and crab offal as an organic fertilizer in crop production<LI> conduct economic profitability analyses of craw-crab offal. </ol> The expected outcome of the proposed grant include (1) establishment of an organice library and (2) enhancing, strengthening and retooling some of our research/extension faculty expertise in food science, organic production, and craw-crab offal utilization.

NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: The project fruition should lead to an economical and environmental way to salvage craw-crab offal in organic production systems (SCOOPS). The project success should help advance organic production in Louisiana and in the southern region. The project seeks to provide stakeholders (rural, urban, and suburban) an economically low input and environmental friendly means of converting craw-crab offal into an organic fertilizer and/or livestock feed.

<P> APPROACH: The overall project approach is to enhance and strengthen our research/extension expertise in organic production, human health, food safety, sustainable agriculture, and aquatic offal utilization in pork, vegetable, and field crop production.
