SCALE-UP OF SOYBEAN OIL-BASED THERMOPLASTIC PRODUCTS FOR SUSTAINABLE ASPHALT PAVEMENTS.

Objective

Objective 1:Optimizeand scale the BioMAG-Easy Pave (P1) formulationto 20,000 gallons for constructing 33 lane-mile equivalents of cold-in-place recycled pavements reaching an indirect tensile strength of at least 45 psi and 4-inch Marshall Stability Test of 1250 lbfwithin 48 hours of construction. Objective 2:Optimizeand scale the BioMAG-FogNFix (P2) formulationto 20,000 gallons for the treatment of 33 lane-mile equivalents of asphalt pavements and evaluation over time of performance characteristics includingsurface friction; water permeability reductions persistent for at least 1 year; and rheological changes as a function of pavement depth. Objective 3: The P3 pilot and demonstration will evaluate the field performance ofBioMAG-EasyPMACmodified asphalt mixtures with higher RAP contents under high truck traffic conditions at the NCAT Test Track and on open access roadways totaling 33 lane-mile equivalents. The performance characteristics to be evaluated, including structural pavement contribution, surface distresses, and changes in the modified binder over time due to oxidative aging compared to the SBS-modified mixtures with lower RAP contents allowed in the current state specifications. Objective 4:Integrate the bioproduct development activities with holistic TEA, LCA, and EPD to model each bioproduct manufacturing stage and include its impacts on pavement life cycle extension and waste reduction. Feed experimental data into the impact models to increase the cost-competitiveness and environmental benefits of bioproducts P1-P3 over incumbent products.
