The Scottish Government have a Scottish Dietary Target and FSA have a strategic plan target to reduce salt intakes to 6g/day. Both targets are currently set for achievement by 2010. In 2006, FSAS commissioned a urinary sodium survey in Scotland and found that average salt intakes were 9.1g/day. To monitor Scottish progress towards the 2010 target, the FSAS have commissioned a 2009 survey of 24 hour urinary sodium in a representative sample of the Scottish population.
Research Approach:

The survey will use the main Scottish Health Survey as a sampling frame to achieve a representative sample of 800 adult respondents (19-64yrs).

Respondents will complete 24 hour urine collection and the samples will be analysed for sodium and potassium. PABA analysis will also be conducted to assess the completeness of the samples.
