SURVIVAL AND TRANSPORT OF PATHOGENS FROM ANIMAL PRODUCTION SYSTEMS WITHIN LANDSCAPES OF THE SOUTHEASTERN USA

Objective

1. Determine die-off rates for Salmonella, E coli 0157:H7, and fecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and fecal enterococci) in soil (including soil amended with FGD gypsum¿see Objective 2) and water. 2. Determine transport characteristics of Salmonella and fecal indicator bacteria from poultry litter applications in pasture fields amended with gypsum from coal-fired power plants. 3. Determine hydrologic transport characteristics of fecal bacteria under natural rainfall/runoff conditions on cropped and instrumented zero-order watersheds to which poultry litter is applied.
