To enhance the production of safe chickens through the development and use of probiotics to reduce the flock level of S. Typhimurium infection.

Specific objectives:

To investigate the properties of selected Lactobacillus isolates as probiotic candidates;

To evaluate the potential of the Lactobacillus isolates as probiotics to reduce the colonization of S. Typhimurium in chickens.
Expected Benefits:
To successfully develop the isolates into high quality probiotics for controlling Salmonella infection in poultry. Since S. Typhimurium is one of the major serotypes associated with poultry production in Ontario, the success of the proposed study targeting this pathogen would enhance the production of safe chickens for Ontarians.
