1. Determine baseline prevalence for the proportion of freshly weaned Montana Calves
shedding Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the feces
<P>
2. Determine the effectiveness of an experimental vaccine as a pre-harvest intervention strategy
for reducing the proportion of calves shedding Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the feces
Findings: The baseline prevalence of weaned calves in Montana at 9.4% is enough to perpetuate infection and should be considered a problem. Due to limited number of animals found positive in this study, additional research is needed to establish the potential effectiveness of vaccines against E. coli O157:H7 in pre-conditioning operations.
