Validation and Standardization of PCR-Based Methods for Detection and Quantitative Risk Assessment of Foodborne Pathogens (Food-PCR 2)

Objective

The overall objective of this project was to facilitate implementation of PCR-based methods, such as real-time PCR or microarray-PCR, for both the detection and verification of food-borne pathogens, through harmonization and standardization of methods in Europe. This was achieved by:

Real-time PCR protocols

Establishment of European working groups.

Hands-on workshops

Contribution to the preparation of standard (CEN) documents.

More information

This was an extension of the 5th FP consortium project, Food-PCR. The target micro-organisms were thermotolerant Campylobacter spp., Salmonella enterica and foodborne viruses. The work involved establishment of European working groups, a PCR database, contribution to the preparation of European draft standards in collaboration with European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) Workgroups, hands-on workshops for harmonisation of methodologies, standard operating procedures for collaborative trials, and the exchange of scientists and students.
