This money provided the bulk of the salary for a virology technician (laboratory technician 1). This person performs HPAI, FMD and CSF testing and provides relief to the WSVLs chief virology technician and two other NAHLN-approved technicians when they perform check tests and test field samples for HPAI, FMD, CSF or END.
NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: This grant of 50,000 dollars will allow the continued participation during 2008 of the only accredited veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Wyoming in the state-federal partnership called the National Animal Health Laboratory Network. The purpose of the NAHLN is to ensure sufficient laboratory response capability in the event of a regional or national disease emergency affecting farm animals. Currently the Wyoming laboratory has personnel trained to use NAHLN diagnostic protocols for the following diseases: foot and mouth disease, classical swine fever, highly pathogenic avian influenza, and exotic Newcastle disease.
APPROACH: The WSVL will continue to employ a virology technician who will perform proficiency and field tests for the following diseases using NAHLN protocols: FMD, CSF, HPAI and END. Successful performance of proficiency tests and participation in NAHLN activities (field exercises; annual training) are the principal means whereby outputs will be evaluated.
