  4. Thermal inactivation kinetics of hepatitis A virus in homogenized clam meat (Mercenaria mercenaria)

    • Journal of Applied Microbiology
    • Aims
Epidemiological evidence suggests that hepatitis A virus (HAV) is the most common pathogen transmitted by bivalve mollusks such as clams, cockles, mussels, and oysters. This study aimed to generate thermal inactivation kinetics for HAV as a first step to design adequate thermal processes to control clam-associated HAV outbreaks.

  8. Prevalence of Hepatitis E Virus Infection in Pigs at the Time of Slaughter, United Kingdom, 2013

    • Emerging Infectious Diseases
    • Since 2010, reports of infection with hepatitis E virus (HEV) have increased in England and Wales. Despite mounting evidence regarding the zoonotic potential of porcine HEV, there are limited data on its prevalence in pigs in the United Kingdom. We investigated antibody prevalence, active infection, and virus variation in serum and cecal content samples from 629 pigs at slaughter.

    • Zoonoses and Public Health
    • Hepatitis E virus (HEV) has emerged during the past decade as a causative agent of autochthonous hepatitis and is a clinical concern in Western developed countries. It has been increasingly recognized that pigs are a major reservoir of HEV of genotypes 3 and 4 worldwide and pig-derived food items represent a potential source of infections by these viruses in humans.

    • Applied and Environmental Microbiology
    • Human noroviruses (HNoV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) have been implicated in outbreaks linked to the consumption of presliced ready-to-eat deli meats. The objectives of this research were to determine the thermal inactivation kinetics of HNoV surrogates (murine norovirus 1 [MNV-1] and feline calicivirus strain F9 [FCV-F9]) and HAV in turkey deli meat, compare first-order and Weibull models to describe the data, and calculate Arrhenius activation energy values for each model.

  12. Epidemiology of domestically-acquired hepatitis E virus infection in Japan: assessment of the nationally reported surveillance data, 2007-2013 [STANDARD]

    • Journal of Medical Microbiology
    • In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of reported hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections from developed countries. To describe recent trends in notification and potential risk groups and risk factors in Japan, HEV infection cases and demographic, food consumption, clinical and laboratory data reported during 2007-2013 were analyzed. A total of 530 HEV infections was reported during 2007-2013.

  13. Detection of Hepatitis A Virus in Seeded Oyster Digestive Tissue by Ricin A–Linked Magnetic Separation Combined with Reverse Transcription PCR

    • Journal of Food Protection
    • Ko, Sang-Mu et al. Outbreaks of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infections are most frequently associated with the consumption of contaminated oysters. A rapid and selective concentration method is necessary for the recovery of HAV from contaminated oysters prior to detection using PCR.

  14. Changing hepatitis A epidemiology in the European Union: new challenges and opportunities

    • Eurosurveillance
    • This perspective on hepatitis A in the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) presents epidemiological data on new cases and outbreaks and vaccination policies. Hepatitis A endemicity in the EU/EEA ranges from very low to intermediate with a decline in notification rates in recent decades. Vaccination uptake has been insufficient to compensate for the increasing number of susceptible individuals. Large outbreaks occur.

  15. Systematic Serological Testing for Hepatitis E Virus in Kidney Transplant Recipients [Virology]

    • Journal of Clinical Microbiology
    • Hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3 is endemic in Europe and hyperendemic in southern France. Recent reports of a high prevalence of HEV RNA in blood donations and in culinary specialties from this geographical area confirmed the endemicity of HEV and sources of viral transmission in this geographical area. HEV causes acute and chronic hepatitis in solid organ transplant recipients.
