  9. Structure-Function Analysis of Peptide Signaling in the Clostridium perfringens Agr-like Quorum Sensing System

    • The Agr-like quorum sensing (QS) system of Clostridium perfringens controls production of many toxins, including beta toxin (CPB). We previously showed (Vidal et al. Mol Microbiol. 2012, 83 (1): 179-194) that an eight amino acid, AgrD-derived peptide named 8-R upregulates CPB production by this QS system. The current study synthesized a series of small signaling peptides corresponding to sequences within the C. perfringens AgrD polypeptide to investigate the C.

    • The antibacterial activity and total phenolicTP) content of Agaricus bisporus stipes were assessed using solvent and water extracts to determine its bioactivity. Extraction methods included accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and hot water followed by membrane concentration. Water extract from ASE had the highest TP of 1.08 gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry weight (DW) followed by ethanol at 0.61 mg GAE/g DW and 0.11 mg GAE/g DW for acetone.

Spinach, romaine lettuce and iceberg lettuce were inoculated with a cocktail of five E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella strains, air dried for 30 min and then dipped in CA (10, 25 and 50 ppm) or chlorine (50 ppm) for 60 s. Treated leaves were analyzed for E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella following treatment and during storage at 4C for 14 days.

  12. Yersinia pseudotuberculosis YopD mutants that genetically separate effector protein translocation from host membrane disruption

    • The Yersinia type III secretion system (T3SS) translocates Yop effector proteins into host cells to manipulate immune defenses such as phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. The T3SS translocator proteins YopB and YopD form pores in host membranes, facilitating Yop translocation. While the YopD amino and carboxy termini participate in pore formation, the role of the YopD central region between amino acids 150–227 remains unknown.

  15. Role of capsular modified heptose in the virulence of Campylobacter jejuni

    • The Campylobacter jejuni capsular polysaccharide is important for virulence and often contains a modified heptose. In strain ATCC 700819 (a.k.a. NCTC 11168), the modified heptose branches off from the capsular backbone and is directly exposed to the environment. We reported previously that the enzymes encoded by wcaG, mlghB, and mlghC are involved in heptose modification.

  22. Characterization and Survival of Environmental Escherichia coli O26 Isolates in Ground Beef and Environmental Samples

    • In addition to Escherichia coli O157:H7shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O26 was added to the zero-tolerance adulterant list together with other 5 non-O157 STEC serogroups in 2012. Four farm O26 isolates were used in this study; they were obtained from a on-farm survey study conducted in Alabama. The presence of 3 major pathogenic genes (stx1, stx2, and eaeA) was determined through multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
