  8. Genetic Characterization of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N8) Virus from Domestic Ducks, England, November 2014

    • Emerging Infectious Diseases
    • Genetic sequences of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N8) virus in England have high homology to those detected in mainland Europe and Asia during 2014. Genetic characterization suggests this virus is an avian-adapted virus without specific affinity for zoonoses. Spatio-temporal detections of H5N8 imply a role for wild birds in virus spread.

The first, supplied by Mars Petcare (Thailand) Ltd. was compiled in 2010 from two sets of 295 random samples of maize, one collected at harvest and the second after drying, from two regions that produce more than 70% of the commercially grown maize in Thailand.

  10. Distribution of deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, and their respective modified analogues in milling fractions of naturally contaminated wheat grains

    • World Mycotoxin Journal
    • Mycotoxins are among the most abundant contaminants in food and feed worldwide. Therefore, in the EU maximum levels are established, e.g. for the frequently occurring Fusarium toxins deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA). Additional to DON and ZEA, modified mycotoxins are present in naturally contaminated grain products contributing significantly to the exposure of humans and animals with mycotoxins.

  11. Identification of a Novel Small Non-Coding RNA Modulating the Intracellular Survival of Brucella melitensis

    • Frontiers in Microbiology

In this study, by using a combined bioinformatic and experimental approach, eight novel sRNA genes were identified in intracellular pathogen Brucella melitensis. BSR0602, one sRNA that was highly induced in stationary phase, was further examined and found to modulate the intracellular survival of B. melitensis.

  21. Community-Onset Pyomyositis Caused by a Salmonella enterica Serovar Enteritidis Sequence Type 11 Strain Producing CTX-M-15 Extended-Spectrum {beta}-Lactamase [Case Reports]

    • Journal of Clinical Microbiology
    • We report a case of community-onset pyomyositis due to Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis in South Korea. The isolated strain was resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and harbored sequence type 11 coproducing CTX-M-15 extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL). Physicians should be alert for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment since ESBL-producing nontyphoidal Salmonella infections are difficult to treat without initiation of appropriate empirical antibiotics.

  22. Improved Serodiagnosis of Bovine Brucellosis by Novel Synthetic Oligosaccharide Antigens Representing the Capping M Epitope Elements of Brucella O-Polysaccharide [Immunoassays]

    • Journal of Clinical Microbiology
    • Members of the genus Brucella have cell wall characteristics of Gram-negative bacteria, which in the most significant species includes O-polysaccharide (OPS). Serology is the most cost-effective means of detecting brucellosis, as infection with smooth strains of Brucella leads to the induction of high antibody titers against the OPS, an unbranched homopolymer of 4,6-dideoxy-4-formamido- d -mannopyranosyl residues ( d -Rha4NFo) that are variably α(1->2)- and α(1->3)-linked.

  23. Detection and Discrimination of Classical and Atypical L-Type Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy by Real-Time Quaking-Induced Conversion [Clinical Veterinary Microbiology]

    • Journal of Clinical Microbiology
    • Statutory surveillance of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) indicates that cattle are susceptible to both classical BSE (C-BSE) and atypical forms of BSE. Atypical forms of BSE appear to be sporadic and thus may never be eradicated. A major challenge for prion surveillance is the lack of sufficiently practical and sensitive tests for routine BSE detection and strain discrimination.

  24. Differential Single Nucleotide Polymorphism-Based Analysis of an Outbreak Caused by Salmonella enterica Serovar Manhattan Reveals Epidemiological Details Missed by Standard Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis [Epidemiology]

    • Journal of Clinical Microbiology

  25. Delineating Community Outbreaks of Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium by Use of Whole-Genome Sequencing: Insights into Genomic Variability within an Outbreak [Epidemiology]

    • Journal of Clinical Microbiology
    • Whole-genome next-generation sequencing (NGS) was used to retrospectively examine 57 isolates from five epidemiologically confirmed community outbreaks (numbered 1 to 5) caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium phage type DT170. Most of the human and environmental isolates confirmed epidemiologically to be involved in the outbreaks were either genomically identical or differed by one or two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), with the exception of those in outbreak 1.
